One of the most common questions before any session is: what should I wear? And it’s a fair one — wardrobe is one of the most powerful tools you have for shaping how your images look and feel. Here’s what to consider before your photoshoot in Chicago, whether it’s in our studio or on location.
Start with Your Goal, Not Your Wardrobe
Before opening your closet, ask: what do these images need to communicate? A fashion editorial calls for bold, structured pieces. A personal brand lifestyle shoot benefits from polished but approachable looks. Headshots for a law firm feel different from headshots for a creative agency. Knowing the end use of the images shapes every wardrobe decision that follows.
Bring More Options Than You Think You Need
For any photoshoot in Chicago, we recommend arriving with at least 2–3 complete outfit options per look you’re planning. Colors, textures, and layering all read differently under studio lighting vs. natural light — having options gives us flexibility to find what works best on camera.
What to Avoid
Some general guidelines: avoid very fine stripes or tight patterns (they create a moiré effect on camera), avoid heavy logos unless branding is intentional, and be careful with pure white and pure black in studio settings — they can blow out or flatten without careful lighting. These aren’t absolute rules, but they’re good starting points.
Studio vs. Outdoor — Wardrobe Considerations
Studio sessions in Chicago allow for more dramatic, bold wardrobe choices — structured shapes and strong colors work beautifully against controlled backdrops. Outdoor sessions in Chicago (parks, the lakefront, architectural settings) tend to favor slightly softer palettes that don’t compete with the environment. If you’re doing a combined studio and outdoor Signature session, consider a bold studio look and a more natural outdoor look.
